Italian Saxophone Quartet brings “La Dolce Vita” to Columbia

Sunday, March 31, 2019 at 3 pm

Heralding a rare treat for Candlelight audiences:  the Italian Saxophone Quartet, a virtuosic display of saxophone artistry at the highest level, performs March 31 at 3 pm. The soundtrack of our lives is full of saxophones, from R&B to jazz, but not often do we have a chance to hear classically oriented sax music of this kind and caliber, more tucked-in string quartet than bebop icon Charlie Parker.  The quartet’s diverse, energetic program—La Dolce Vita—includes a classical standard (Bach’s “Air on the G String”), film music (Rota’s “Fellini Suite,” Morricone’s “Film Suite”), ragtime (Joplin’s “The Easy Winners”) and nuevo tango (Piazzolla’s “Oblivion” and “Libertango”).

Comedian W. C. Fields once defined a gentleman as someone who owns a saxophone but refuses to play it.  These Italian gentlemen would cause Fields to reconsider.  The quartet is “among the most interesting groups on the Italian musical scene, as much for the originality of its instrumentation as for the unquestioned quality of its performance.” (Il Messaggero, Rome) Rave reviews come from both sides of the Atlantic.  “Perfection of style, timing and showmanship” (Sarasota Herald Tribune).  The quartet has won several chamber music competitions, including unanimous first prize at the prestigious “Premo Ancona” in Italy.

Tap into this “scintillating whirlwind of a performance” (Il Messaggero, Venice) by four great saxes.
