The East Coast Chamber Orchestra Brings Its Creativity and Communal Ethos to Columbia
Come experience an alternative model of classical music-making, as the East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO) makes its Baltimore metropolitan area debut at UMBC’s Linehan Concert Hall on Saturday, April 13, at 7 pm, sponsored by Columbia’s Candlelight Concert Society. Artistic Director Irina Kaplan Lande is “thrilled that wecan offer our audiences an ensemble of this scope, skill level, and reputation. It demonstrates again Candlelight’s success in attracting world-class talent.”
ECCO consists of 18 self-organizing, self-conducted musicians drawn from distinguished chamber groups and multiple major orchestras, from Boston to San
Francisco. “Picture an ensemble where all the performers are equally excellent and each could be the main soloist of the afternoon and you would have the East Coast Chamber Orchestra.” (Albany Times Union)
The members of ECCO are noted for their commitment, their camaraderie, and their “considerable collective intelligence.” (The Inquirer [Philadelphia]). Their focused and impassioned playing offers concertgoers the best of both worlds - the power and tonal breadth of an orchestra and the precision and sensitivity of superb chamber music.
ECCO’s programming is invariably inventive and inspiring. In Columbia, ECCO performs “An Ancient Walkabout,” a musical journey that takes the listener on an
exploration of the depth and virtuosity of early music while drawing harmonious connections between the western classical music tradition and music inspired by Peru and West Africa. The program features female talent - a piece by contemporary composer Gabriela Lena Frank and an arrangement by the violinist, Maureen Nelson - as well as compositions by Purcell, Bach and Britten.
The result of all this is “music-making that could bring you to your knees,” (Oregon Music News), performances “so notable that you always make a mental note not to miss this… ensemble when it pops up.” (The Inquirer)

Candlelight proudly continues its “One Buy One” program, whereby each paying adult may receive a complimentary ticket for one child (ages 9-17).
