PIANIST PAUL LEWIS COMBINES HUMOR AND BRILLIANCE IN CONCERT ON

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26, 7:30 PM IN SMITH THEATRE, HOWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

COLUMBIA, MD-September 11, 2019. Experience this rare opportunity to share an intimate setting with the legendary British pianist, Paul Lewis, regarded throughout the classical music world as one of the leading musicians of his generation. “There is never any doubting the musicality and sheer  accomplishment of Lewis’s playing... an intensely thoughtful and refined pianist” admired for his interpretations and recordings of classical-era repertoire. (The Guardian) His set of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas has attracted widespread acclaim, many critics calling it a “benchmark.” (BBC Music Magazine)

Those who share Lewis’s “love amounting almost to obsession for the high ground of Viennese classicism” will be amply rewarded at October’s concert. (The Telegraph) The program, carefully crafted by Lewis, opens with the humor of Haydn, in whose work the pianist has recently been immersing himself; interposes the seriousness and brilliance of Brahms; and ends gloriously, with Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, described by the composer and musicologist Dr. Robert Greenberg as an exemplar of the master’s mature compositional art, characterized by “majesty and momentum... and Beethoven’s propensity to build grand musical structures from the smallest of musical ideas... (to) discover the world in a grain of sand.”

The program:

Haydn: Piano Sonata in E minor, Hob XVI: 34

Brahms: Three Intermezzi, Op. 117

Beethoven: 33 Variations in C on a Waltz by Diabelli, Op. 120
