HAMMERKLAVIER IN CONCERT WITH PIANIST MARC-ANDRÉ HAMELIN

Presented by Candlelight Concert Society

By Sponsored October 21, 2022

The Candlelight Concert Society brings to local and virtual audiences a quintessential piano recital next weekend, featuring world-renowned artist Marc-André Hamelin.

Hailed by The New York Times as “a performer of near-superhuman technical prowess,” Hamelin presents his unrivaled blend of consummate musicianship and brilliant technique regularly across the globe.

“He is, without a doubt, one of the most brilliant pianists of today,” Irina Kaplan Lande, Candlelight’s Artistic Director, said. “It is an incredible opportunity to see him perform live.”

Hamelin will perform Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 29 in B-flat Major, commonly known as the ‘Hammerklavier Sonata,’ on Oct 29, 7:30 PM EDT, at UMBC’s Linehan Hall. A quintessential entry in European classical music, many scholars consider the Hammerklavier to be one of the greatest and most technically demanding piano sonatas of all time.

Other works Hamelin will present next Saturday include selections by Gabriel Fauré and Suite à l’ancienne, a composition by Hamelin himself. Completed in 2020, the suite was originally commissioned by pianist Rachel Naomi Kudo.

“The combination of [Marc’s] brilliant mind and complete ease and mastery at the instrument [produced a] phenomenal and original work,” Kudo said in an interview last year.

For the first time this concert season, Candlelight is offering livestream tickets as well as tickets to attend the event in person. Livestream tickets cost $20 each and are dedicated to non-local music lovers.

“Marc has an enormous international audience,” Kaplan Lande said. “We want to make sure we can share his work with those audiences, too.”
