Macaroni Kid Columbia Review: Lesson Experience With Music & Arts

Music Lessons Your Way

October 31, 2020

What a difference four weeks can make! We just finished our fourth lesson with Music & Arts and I am impressed. When we began, my son had only just played around on his own with the keyboard, but had no real knowledge of how to play. He had a background in music, but only knew how to read the bass clef notes from playing the cello. He was definitely a beginner.

Our first week, the instructor taught him hand/finger positioning and they talked about what he knew and didn't Then he started off with some basics and a plan to start in a workbook the following week. Once we got the book, they went each week through the different songs in the book. I have to give it to pianists, they make it look so easy, but it is not an easy instrument to learn. Reading music for the left and right hand at the same time amazes me.

I mentioned that our family is musical and loves music, but I played the flute and that is so much different than the piano. I was so impressed at how the instructor used different analogies and broke things down to explain them to my son. This is one area that I am not able to help him with. Each lesson he worked on different songs in the workbook. The instructor was so in tune with my son and what his needs were.

One thing I loved about the virtual private lessons is that my son was able to learn at his own pace. If he mastered something during the week or at his lesson, they would be able to quickly move on to the next thing. When there was something that was a bit harder, like playing with the left and right hand at the same time, they were able to stop and work on that until he was ready to progress. This is such a HUGE benefit for any individual learning to play an instrument because we all learn at different paces. It was very apparent that the instructor was very skilled and knowledgeable and that helped to make these classes run smoothly.

My son's love of music is growing daily because of Music & Arts introducing him to another instrument. He is playing the keyboard on his own almost daily because he is enjoying it so much. I cannot believe how quickly I have seen a difference in his playing and ability since he began these lessons. I truly believe that the progress he has made so quickly is because of the customized lessons that were flexible to our schedule. There was no rushing from one activity to make it to the other with 5 minutes to spare. He was able to get himself prepared and focused for his personalized lesson each week without outside distractions.

I briefly mentioned this in my previous article, but each week we received an email link to the secure platform for him to log in to his private music lesson. It was easy to log in and also served as a reminder that we had class coming up. The expert instructors are background-checked so you have peace of mind that the lesson is secure. If your child is taking lessons in a group at school, I highly recommend checking this out. This is a great way to supplement their school lessons and help them continue moving forward in their musical journey.
