New Year's Eve will be celebrated differently by many of us this year. Ending 2020 with more creative ideas and new traditions just seems fit after this roller coaster of a year. I've been brainstorming ideas to do with my own family this year and thought I'd share them so you can enjoy them with your kids too. My kids have gotten to the point where they try to stay up until midnight and for the most part have been successful for the last year or so. Feel free to do these at any point in the day and celebrate your "midnight" whenever is best for your family.
- Countdown balloons and there is an article in this week's newsletter that goes into a bit more detail if you haven't heard about this idea.
- Balloon Drop at Midnight. I'm going to cut a plastic table cloth in half and lightly tape it back together in the middle with crepe paper as the seam. I'm then going to hang it from the basement ceiling and fill it with balloons and some cut up streamers. I'll have two streamers hanging down (one for each child) to pull so that the balloons will fall.
- Confetti or streamer poppers for more fun at midnight.
- Banging Pots and Pans. The much simpler way of celebrating and making lots of noise at midnight (my husband's personal favorite and the least amount of clean up)
- Mini Pinatas. I got one for each child because they are small and will put some fun ideas of things to do and treats to enjoy inside.
- Family Games. Each family member gets to pick a favorite and you play one each hour. Mad Libs are also a fun addition.
- Make up your own Minute to Win It type games and take turns trying each other's challenges.
- Dance Party to your favorite tunes. Turn the lights out and add some glow sticks for more fun.
- Make a special dinner. We are doing an appetizer only dinner with lots of different appetizers to choose from. Super easy and always a fun treat!
- Get some plastic champagne cups and sparkling cider and toast in the New Year.
- Build a fort, grab some popcorn, and watch a movie.
- Have a family sleepover after the ball drops and everyone is ready to fall asleep. (A great plan for those younger children who may fall asleep earlier and you won't have to move them)
- Take turns talking about favorite memories over the past year and brainstorm ideas for new ones to make in 2021.
- Zoom calls with friends and family! Those have become a staple for family connections this year.
Have a safe, healthy and Happy New Year!
