In honor of Read Across America Day on March 2, I interviewed two children to get their perspective on reading. Here is what they had to say:
Do you like to read?
7 year old -Yes.
11 year old -Of course I do.
What is your favorite book and why?
7 year old -I don't know I have so many. Elephant and Piggie, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Owl Diaries, Unicorn Diaries. Because they are about my favorite things.
11 year old -Spy School series because it's very interesting and there is a lot of action.
Do you think it is important to learn how to read? Why?
7 year old -Yes because it helps your brain.
11 year old -Yes you can't function without reading...cereal box, computer, everything.
What makes reading so awesome?
7 year old -Cause it tells you things.
11 year old -It's something non screen related to do that uses time and is interesting.
Have you learned anything from reading?
7 year old -Yes, Eliza facts (referencing Eliza Hamilton).
11 year old -Yes. The Earth is one astronomical unit away from the Sun. An astronomical unit is the distance from the Earth to the Sun so if a planet was twice the amount of Earth to the Sun it would be 2 AUs.
What would you tell someone about reading?
7 year old -It is the best.
11 year old -Do it.
Ask your kids these questions and see what they have to say. They might surprise you with their answers. Have Fun!
