Read Across America Day - March 2, 2023

Create and Celebrate a Nation of Diverse Readers

February 25, 2023

As a family, we love to read and from very early on celebrated Read Across America Day. For quite a few years we have made it a day of fun with themed activities and crafts. Now that my kids are getting older, we don't set aside specific time for activities and crafts, but I still make it a point to remind my kids the importance of reading.

Reading paves the way to creativity, imagination, and helps to build other skills. It is amazing what we can be, do and learn through the power of reading.

Young or old we can all participate in Read Across America Day. Pick up your favorite book and read to your young ones. Encourage new readers to read with you and to you. You can even read to your older kids who don't need your help anymore. Make it fun!

This year's theme from the National Education Association (NEA) is Create & Celebrate a nation of diverse readers. We want our children to be reading and learning all year round and NEA has come up with monthly themes to help your children be more diverse readers. Suggestions for books to read each month can be found HERE. Resources for all age levels are available. I even challenge the adults to pick up one from the library and read it with your child. You can even grab one to read on your own.

A couple of years ago, my son had been a bit under the weather this past week and one morning wasn't feeling the greatest. He was up late not feeling great and struggling to fall asleep. I told him to read in his bed and relax. He said he couldn't read because books are so exciting that he wouldn't fall asleep. How awesome is that? Reading is definitely not a chore in my house. It's a fun activity that opens up their imagination and brings excitement into their lives. It's never too early to start!

Knowledge truly does bring power. I encourage you to find something special to do at home and celebrate reading. Make it a fun day! Happy Reading!
