The Candlelight Concert Society brings to Howard County a once-in-a-lifetime peformance next weekend, featuring world-renowned pianist Angela Hewitt.
Acclaimed as one of the world’s foremost interpreters for music by J. S. Bach, Hewitt is an award-winning recitalist and recording artist well-respected across the world. Her cycle for Hyperion Records of all the major keyboard works by Bach has been described as “one of the record glories of our age” (The Sunday Times). In 2020, she received the City of Leipzig Bach Medal: an enormous honor that for the first time in its 17-year history was awarded to a woman.
Hewitt will perform on Apr 1, 7:30 PM EDT, at HCC’s Horowitz Smith Theatre.
“It’s on April 1st, but it’s no joke!” Irina Kaplan Lande, Candlelight’s Artistic Director, said. “It feels unbelievable, that Angela Hewitt will play here in Howard County, but it’s no joke.”
With World Piano Day occurring on Mar 29 and J. S. Bach’s birthday on Mar 31, Hewitt’s recital comes with impeccable timing. Bach’s piece that Hewitt will perform is the English Suite No. 6 in D Minor, BWV 811, which she said remains one of her favorites even after many years.
“It is one of those works by Bach that gives the interpreter the greatest scope for emotional involvement,” Hewitt wrote for her recording with Hyperion Records. “[…] when we analyze what is there, it becomes all the more remarkable.”
Other works on Hewitt’s performance program include sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti and the Piano Sonata No. 3 in F Minor, Op. 5, by Johannes Brahms. Hailed for its expansive and majestic grandeur, Brahms’s third piano sonata was originally praised by fellow composer and music critic Robert Schumann.
“Sooner or later […] someone would and must appear, fated to give us the ideal expression of the times, one who would not gain his mastery by gradual stages, but rather spring fully armed like Minerva from the head of Jove,” Schumann wrote. “And he has come, a young blood at whose cradle graces and heroes mounted guard. His name is Johannes Brahms […]”
Tickets for the event cost $45 per show. With the purchase of one adult ticket, an accompanying child up to age 17 will receive a ticket free of charge. Student tickets cost $10, and tickets for groups of 10 or more cost $35 per person.
